Are you ready to take your lettering skills to the next level? Spencer Charles, senior designer at New York-based graphic design firm Louise Fili Ltd, will walk you through a series of techniques in Adobe Illustrator to create unique letterforms. From workspace tips to embellishment techniques, learn to create stunning work using a program you already love.

Each student will chose a word to illustrate in a variety of styles, each time learning a different technique in Adobe Illustrator.

Illustrator is as diverse as your creative vision. Expand your skills while creating fantastic work.

What You’ll Learn

In this class, you’ll learn a variety of techniques for using Adobe Illustrator for lettering. We’ll walk through tips, tricks, and best practices to help you create your work.

Research. We’ll take a look at some historical examples and examine how common letterforms are made.

Workspace Best Practices. We’ll go through best ways to use grids, layers, and the infamous pen tool.

Script and Uppercase Alphabet Styles. We’ll take a look at how you construct lowercase and uppercase letters, and see how you can achieve certain styles in Illustrator.

Effects and Embellishment. We’ll elevate your work to the next level, creating inline, outlines, drop shadows, and more.

Monograms. We’ll wrap up the class by creating monograms, demonstrating how to weave and interlock letterforms.

What You’ll Make

In this class, we’ll walk through a series of different techniques that you’ll be able to apply directly to your project. Each student will chose a word to illustrate in a variety of styles. With each style, you’ll learn a different technique in Adobe Illustrator.

Deliverable. You will letter a word in a series of different typographic styles.
Brief. You will research references for different type styles and apply those best practices to creating type with the pen tool. You’ll demonstrate skill based on key lessons in script, caps, effects, embellishments, and a monogram.
Collaboration. As you go through the class, update your project to share your progress with your fellow students. Ask for feedback on your letters, and offer thoughtful criticism to your peers.
